Change Ahead for Fisher-Mitchell Falcon Footnotes
In these challenging economic times, we will make an effort to cut back on paper and photocopier usage by asking all parents who have access to a computer to read the Falcon Footnotes online at the Fisher-Mitchell School website.  If you DO NOT have access to a computer, please call or send a note to the Fisher-Mitchell office to have a paper copy of the newsletter sent home.  This method will begin with our first newsletter of 2009.

Read-a-Thon Coming in the New Year
The annual elementary school Read-a-Thon will be coming at the end of January, 2009.  This event, sponsored by the Literacy Support Fund, raises money to support literacy in both elementary schools in Bath.  The Fund, with the help of the Bath Elementary PTA, provides free books for over 500 students at the Book Fair and also funds literacy efforts in classrooms.  In the past, the Read-a-Thon fundraiser raised money to enable both elementary libraries to purchase books.

The Read-a-Thon gives students the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading at home for 2 weeks.  Early and emerging readers may have parents read to them during the Read-a-Thon.  This year the Read-a-Thon will have a change.  Students will record the time they spend reading at home rather than the number of books they’ve read.  Please consider giving your child permission to participate in this fundraiser when they bring more information home after the holiday break.  As always, thank you for your support!

Patten Free Library Children’s room News
Tuesday, December 23, 6:30-7:30 pm, The 2nd Annual ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Pajama Storytime.  Children wear PJs and listen to the reading of Clement Clarke Moore’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas: Or Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas.  They’ll make a paper Christmas stocking to hang with care by the Library’s fireplace and enjoy some holiday refreshments while listening to Jason Lee play piano Christmas music.
Book Buddies:  Spark the love of reading with our reading mentoring program, BOOK BUDDIES that encourages younger children to learn to read. If you’ re a responsible middle, high school student or an adult wanting to volunteer to read with or to a younger child or , if you’re a parent wanting to give your child an extra reading boost, please sign up, now, in the Children’s Room. All the meetings take place in the Children’s Room while the parent stays in the Library during the half hour duration. The program can be a single session or a series. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll try to match Child with Book Buddy and, then, call you to arrange the times/days to get together.

Thank you to all the people that had a hand in one of the most successful Holiday Fairs!   A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers that became personal shoppers, wrappers, stockers, and cleaners.   Without the incredible people that gave of their skills, time and love this would not have been the huge success it was.  We raised enough money to see that four families have a joyous Christmas, that each principal had funds to purchase needed shoes, coats, boots, mittens and hats, and we were even able to donate money to our local soup kitchen.   This was a community event, we had volunteers from the Bath Police Department, Grace Episcopal Church, and local merchants and people that don't even have children in the schools, but have heard about the Holiday Fair and want to help out.    Because of budget issues we had to raise the funds to pay for two bus drivers and gas to transport the children from Fisher Mitchell to Dike Newell.    Thanks to the generosity of the Bath Elementary PTA they were able to pay for one bus driver and the gas.   The PTA also supplied the funds to purchase snacks and much needed quarters.   Every child that entered our shopping area had the funds necessary to purchase something for everyone in their family.  Thanks to Mr. Larry Dyer we only had to pay one driver.   He graciously offered to drive the second bus...THANK YOU MR. DYER!     I am reading thru the multitudes of thank you cards one thing that is repeated is the quality and amount of items the children had to choose from.    Thank you to everyone that took the time and effort to donate items.    I am sure by now I sound like a broken record, but without all of the wonderful people that donated time, energy, items, and money this would not have been the wonderful event it was.
Thank you!   Kimberly F. Gates
