Dear Friends of Owney,

My name is Rosemarie ‘Ree’ Granger and Bev Adams has passed the Owney project on to me. She also sent me names of teachers who want to participate. I do not have 50 states yet.
I do have some extras schools from the same states and will see what I can do to accommodate them.

First I want to say Bev Adams did an incredible job getting Owney to all 50 states. She had the patience and tenacity to make it happen.
I also want to thank Jan Hodges <hodgesj@hssd.net> for getting Owney going this year.

Last year I sent out 5 Owney's and only one was found. Jan Hodges had one arrive at her school. Therefore she volunteer to send that on on its way. His presnt schedule is here.

If I get more classes that want Owney I will send out a second Owney.

If you jopin the project please remember to send postcards (homemade are fine ) to all the other schoosls and to email me a message to put in his online journal. owney@rsu1.org

There is a photocopy of the Lynn Hall book in Owney's box. She gave me permission.

When the Owneys return to me I will have him sent to the President.

I will still need from you the following:
Teacher(s) name
Email Address
School name
School address and zip
Email
School phone number
Principal’s or secretary’s name and number
Start of School
Vacation (You might want to specify winter break, spring break, and any other extended
breaks (some school are on year-round schedules or have other long breaks)
End of School
Grade level
It would be very helpful to have the name of your principal or secretary so I have someone to call in case you are not available. I have used this method before when I could not contact the teacher and the teacher did not have time to tell the office to send Owney on to another school. (Teachers transfer, illness, or unexpected family leave)

The rest of the plan remains the same.
The Basics
1. Collect or make postcards for the other participating classes and prepare to mail them.

2. Get ready to have Owney visit your class.
3. Write a letter to the President and add it to Owney's box.
a.  Bev always tried to have every class receive a letter from the President.
4. Mail Owney to keep him on schedule.
5. Send an e-mail to Owney@bathpublicschools.com to share the news from Owney.
    a.  The news from Owney is forwarded to the other teachers.
    b.  The news posted in the journal on the web page.
•    Photos of Owney and/or your school can be posted.
•    A link to your school’s website can be posted.
•    Photos of students will not be posted.
    c.  The e-mail news alerts the next teacher that Owney is on the way.
    d.  This is a great opportunity to share what makes your State special.
6. Mail the postcards as soon as possible.
    a.  This is another opportunity to share what makes your State special.
    b.  The most prevalent complaint is that classes did not receive a postcard from every participating class.  Please make sure you keep this basic commitment.

The schedule depends on each participant.  I have no control over how fast he travels.  Typically, the first few teachers keep Owney moving, then people must think, “We’ve got all year!” We all get busy around report card time and the holidays.  Owney seems to slow down.  It’s tempting to keep Owney for just one extra day.  Owney really needs to keep up the speed all year long for both groups.  If everyone keeps to these guidelines, Owney can make it to all the participants and to the White House in one school year.  We are all counting on you to get Owney to the next school on time.

If you remember to contact the next teacher, they will have more time to prepare for Owney’s visit.  Please make sure you check your e-mails for the most current itinerary or Owney will need to backtrack so he doesn’t miss anyone
